body
Summary
Summary
The Court Interpreters Advisory Panel recommends that the Judicial Council authorize a pilot program to evaluate the limited use of qualified American Sign Language (ASL) generalist interpreters in California courts. The pilot is intended to expand language access for Deaf and hard of hearing court users, address the ongoing shortage of certified ASL court interpreters, support workforce development, and collect data on the effectiveness of using qualified ASL generalist interpreters in court proceedings. Findings from the pilot will be used to develop recommendations and proposed revisions to the American Sign Language (ASL) Generalist Interpreter Guidelines for future consideration by the Judicial Council.
